Herbert Hopkins is among the men who have accepted John Fountain’s “Face-In-A-Book” Challenge for men to read to children on Thursday mornings at the Matteson Elementary School, in Matteson, Illinois, a Chicago south suburb.

Needed: Men. Black or white. Young or old. We need you to show up. We’re not asking you to climb the highest mountain. Cross the deepest sea. It is not a negligible thing.

Potential impact: Seismic.

Just asking you for 30 of your 10,080 minutes in one week, a fraction of your 525,600 minutes a year. Are “our” children worth your time?
